The Role and Uses of Black Silicon Carbide

Black silicon carbide is mainly made of quartz sand, petroleum coke, and high-quality silicon as raw materials and is produced by high-temperature smelting in a resistance furnace. It has a hardness between alumina and diamond, with a mechanical strength higher than that of alumina, and is brittle and sharp. Black silicon carbide is a type of silicon carbide abrasive, and is also one of the important basic abrasives in industrial production. Do you know what black silicon carbide is? What are the uses of black silicon carbide? Here is an introduction to black silicon carbide and its uses.

The role of black silicon carbide

Silicon carbide black is made by high-temperature smelting of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), sawdust, etc. in a resistance furnace. It is a black opaque body with hexagonal crystals and a Mohs hardness of 9.15, which is second only to diamond and boron carbide. It is brittle and sharp, and has a certain conductivity. The raw materials used for black silicon carbide have high purity requirements, and the physical properties are similar to green silicon carbide grit, but the performance of black silicon carbide is slightly brittle, and it also has good thermal conductivity and semiconductor properties.

The uses of black silicon carbide

  • Abrasives. Black silicon carbide is mainly used to make grinding wheels, sandpaper, oilstones, grinding heads, grinding pastes, and surface polishing of monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and various devices in photovoltaic products.

  • Advanced refractory materials. Silicon carbide black can be used as a metallurgical deoxidizer and high-temperature resistant material to make high-temperature furnace components, support components, etc.

  • Functional ceramics. Black silicon carbide not only reduces the capacity of the kiln, but also improves the quality of kiln products and shortens the cycle. It is an ideal indirect material for making high-temperature non-oxide ceramics, reaction-sintered ceramics, and ceramic glazes.

  • Non-ferrous metals. Black silicon carbide is also used in the steel industry and metallurgical ore-dressing industry.

Silicon carbide black has stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, small thermal expansion coefficient, and good wear resistance, it has many uses besides being used as an abrasive. For example, special technology is used to coat silicon carbide powder on the inner wall of a turbine impeller or cylinder body, which can improve wear resistance and extend the service life by 1-2 times. High-grade refractory materials made from silicon carbide have good thermal shock resistance, small volume, light weight, and high strength, and have good energy-saving effects. Low-grade silicon carbide (containing about 85% SiC) is an excellent deoxidizer, which can accelerate the steelmaking process, facilitate the control of chemical composition, and improve the quality of steel. In addition, silicon carbide is widely used in the production of electric heating elements and silicon carbide rods. Silicon carbide has high hardness, excellent thermal conductivity, is a semiconductor, and can resist oxidation at high temperatures.
